Right place, wrong time

April 26, 2008

On my visit to L & G every morning I count at least 2 or 3 people crossing the cycle lane without even bothering to take a quick glance to see if any cyclists are coming.

(Despite the fact that it’s green and has a big picture of a bicycle painted on it) I dont think they even realise that its a cycle lane, maybe because theres rarely a cyclist on it.

The likelihood of a fast cyclist coming down that lane is pretty low, but still, its only a matter of time until one of these fools gets lick up and mash up and bruk up, no doubt by me.

After what happened to that woman who stepped in and ended up getting KTFO*, I’ll keep my eyes peeled, but theres always one fool who can’t be avoided. Watch this space. There’ll be blood.

*knocked the fuck over/out

Another problem is with this (contra flow) cycle lane is the side street leading onto it. Its one-way for cars, but the cycle lane goes in the opposite direction. there arse no signs to alert drivers pulling out from the side street, that theres a cycle lane there and that cycles can come from their right hand side. so they pull out if they see that theres nowt coming from their left, oblivious to the fact that there might be a cyclist coming from their right.

shit cycle lane

Recipe for disaster.

It’s a good example of poor thinking – no, fucking downright dangerously inadequate thinking. By some fuckwit who is either short-sighted or wants cyclists to get killed.

Almost every morning I nearly get hit by someone who doesn’t know that the cycle lane exists. Luckily I know to expect and avoid them. All it needs is a warning sign for fuck’s sake. What kind of idiot couldn’t see that when the cycle lane was first built?

  1. Where is that?

You could request a sign via the council website. I did just that last November and spent 3 months emailing back and forth to the transport department. Eventually the local engineer fobbed me off with “thanks for letting us know, we are currently looking at a wider scheme in the area and will consider your suggestion”. This was bollocks as the area was extensively redesigned a couple of years ago and all that was required was a single sign that could be put up in 10 minutes. I have left it a while and will start hassling him again soon.
